Le boygenius sono un supergruppo musicale statunitense indie-rock / folk-rock formato dalle artiste Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers e Lucy Dacus.

La band nasce nel 2018 e debutta nello stesso anno con l’EP ''boygenius''. Nel 2023 il gruppo pubblica l’album ''the record'' e l’EP ''the rest''.

==Nome==

Il nome ''boygenius'' (scritto deliberatamente con l’iniziale minuscola) è stato scelto dalle tre fondatrici prendendo ispirazione da episodi in cui i colleghi uomini ricevevano lodi e venivano definiti prodigi, mentre molte idee da parte di donne rimanevano inascoltate. Un “boygenius” quindi, secondo una definizione del gruppo, è una persona di sesso maschile che ha ricevuto per tutta la sua vita attenzioni e incoraggiamenti per far valere le proprie idee, poiché sempre considerate geniali e grandi, in realtà considerate tali solo perché partorite dalla mente di un uomo <ref>Bridget Read, ''[https://www.vogue.com/article/boygenius-oral-history-lucy-dacus-phoebe-bridgers-julien-baker A Brief Oral History of Boygenius]'', «Vogue», 31 ottobre 2018.</ref>.

Il 21 settembre 2023, vi è stato un dibattito social dopo che il frontman della band The 1975, Matty Healy, ha pubblicato sulla piattaforma X una battuta sull’idea di creare una band chiamata “Girlretard”, ispirato dal nome del gruppo ''boygenius''. Dopo la risposta da parte di Dacus, Healy ha disattivato il suo account <ref>James Factora, ''[https://www.them.us/story/lucy-dacus-matty-healy-deleted-twitter Matty Healy Deleted His X Account After Getting Dunked on by Lucy Dacus]'', «them», 22 settembre 2023.</ref>.

Le boygenius sono spesso etichettate come ''girl-group'' (gruppo musicale formato da ragazze). In diverse interviste hanno però dichiarato di non voler essere classificate in base al loro genere, ma in base alle loro qualità stilistiche e musicali, anche se il loro essere donne influisce sui temi trattati nelle loro canzoni. Inoltre, tutte e tre si identificano come ''queer'' e vorrebbero catturare l’attenzione sull’argomento, ma al contempo non vorrebbero essere giudicate secondo la loro identità, ma in base a ciò che artisticamente producono.

Le tre hanno più volte preso ispirazione da modelli musicali maschili, con l’obiettivo di promuovere una maggiore inclusività delle musiciste donne e ricevere il medesimo trattamento riservato ai colleghi uomini. ===Formazione e ''boygenius''===
Bridgers e Dacus conoscono Baker nel 2016, quando, in momenti diversi dell'anno, aprono alcune date del suo tour negli Stati Uniti, mentre Bridgers e Dacus si incontrano tra di loro solo due anni dopo. 

La band nasce nel 2018, quando le tre artiste decidono di effettuare insieme un tour in Nord America: ufficialmente, 19 concerti firmati Baker e Bridgers e aperti da Dacus. Poco prima di iniziare il tour, si riuniscono in studio con l’idea di incidere un singolo per promuovere gli imminenti concerti, ma arrivano a registrare sei canzoni e decidono così di formare un gruppo musicale vero e proprio. 

Il gruppo debutta il 26 ottobre 2018 con un EP, intitolato ''boygenius'', pubblicato sotto l’etichetta discografica Matador Records, ed eseguito durante le date del tour. Il disco riceve una valutazione di 8.3/10 dalla rivista musicale online «Pitchfork» e 5/5 stelle dal magazine britannico «NME». Dopo una pausa di quasi cinque anni in cui le tre componenti pubblicano progetti solisti, le boygenius si riuniscono e, il 18 gennaio 2023, pubblicano tre singoli: ''$20'', ''Emily I'm Sorry'' e ''True Blue'', ai quali si aggiunge, il 1 marzo, anche ''Not Strong Enough''. Prima della pubblicazione dell’album ''the record'', il 30 marzo viene pubblicato ''the film'', un cortometraggio di 14 minuti diretto dall’attrice e regista Kristen Stewart, che raccoglie in successione i primi tre singoli (''$20'', ''Emily I'm Sorry'' e ''True Blue'') e li accompagna a tre video-storie intrecciate, nelle quali, a turno, ogni componente del gruppo è protagonista.
<br />Il 31 marzo 2023, le boygenius pubblicano sotto l’etichetta discografica Interscope Records il loro primo album, ''the record'', a cui segue il tour globale ''the tour''.

Il 13 ottobre 2023, mentre il tour volge al termine, viene pubblicato l’EP ''the rest'', formato da 4 canzoni e suonato durante le ultime date in America, spesso su un palco acustico, allestito in mezzo al pubblico, su cui le boygenius si spostano per terminare il concerto con l’esecuzione dell’EP. 

===Scioglimento===
Il 2 febbraio 2024, durante un concerto acustico presso il locale The Smell a Los Angeles, le boygenius annunciano che quella sarà la loro ultima performance dal vivo prima di una pausa a tempo indeterminato, poi confermata anche durante un’intervista ai Grammy Awards. 

==Stile e influenze==

===Stile===
Le boygenius sono una band indie-rock / folk-rock. Trattandosi di un supergruppo, tuttavia, ognuna delle artiste contribuisce con il proprio stile musicale, che può distinguersi in modo netto nelle canzoni in cui è una penna a prevalere sulle altre, come nel caso dei tre singoli che hanno anticipato l’uscita di ''the record''. 

Nel brano ''$20'' lo stile dominante è quello di Baker, autrice e principale interprete del pezzo, che si distingue da quello delle compagne per i suoni heavy-rock e i riff insistenti, uniti a testi che esprimono tendenze autodistruttive e velate proteste. 

Nel singolo ''Emily I'm Sorry'', a prevalere sono la scrittura e la voce di Bridgers, che adotta uno stile folk, più intimo e acustico, mentre canta di instabilità, rimpianti e speranze, ricordando una sua passata relazione. 

A seguire, ''True Blue'', una ballad scritta e interpretata da Dacus, dallo stile indie e malinconico, con un testo che richiama la fedeltà e i ricordi (l’espressione inglese ''true blue'' significa infatti ‘fedele’).

A partire dalle canzoni prettamente individuali, fino ad arrivare a quelle più collaborative, la cooperazione delle boygenius nasce dall’incontro di stili e voci differenti, che danno vita ad armonizzazioni coese e complementari, dove ogni timbro influenza i brani con le proprie caratteristiche. Le boygenius inseriscono spesso nei loro brani riferimenti ad artisti musicali e canzoni.
Ne sono esempi Paul Simon, tra i ringraziamenti di ''the record'', da cui hanno preso ispirazione per la canzone ''Cool About It'' (più precisamente a partire dal brano ''The Boxer'' di Simon & Garfunkel); oppure Leonard Cohen, citato nel titolo dell’omonima traccia di ''the record'' e all’interno della canzone stessa, che riprende due versi del suo ''Anthem'' (“There’s a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in”).
Chiaro riferimento al brano ''Revolution 1'' dei Beatles è il titolo della canzone ''Revolution 0'', presente in ''the record''; mentre da ''Strong Enough'', di Sheryl Crow, è stata tratta ispirazione per la traccia ''Not Strong Enough''. Più velato è l’omaggio nella canzone ''We’re In Love'' all’artista folk statunitense Elliott Smith, che Dacus ha rivelato aver citato nel verso: “I’ll be the boy with the pink carnation / Pinned to my lapel”, riferendosi all’episodio che ha visto Smith protagonista durante la cerimonia degli Oscar 1997, quando si è presentato con un garofano rosa attaccato alla sua giacca bianca, ma è stato costretto a toglierlo perché ritenuto sciocco dagli organizzatori. Durante la cerimonia dei Grammy Awards 2024 Baker, Bridgers e Dacus hanno indossato completi bianchi ai quali hanno aggiunto garofani rosa in onore di Elliott Smith. 

Le boygenius nel 2023 hanno condiviso sulla piattaforma Spotify una playlist intitolata ''boygenius: Blueprint'', con 82 canzoni che le hanno ispirate nella creazione dell’album ''the record''. Alcuni degli artisti presenti sono Mitski, Big Thief, The National, LCD Soundsystem, Sinéad O’Connor, Regina Spektor, Fugazi e Florence + The Machine.

==Riferimento in comunità LGBTQ+==

Le boygenius, sin dal loro esordio nel 2018, hanno avuto un ruolo significativo nella comunità LGBTQ+. Le tre, infatti, apertamente queer, hanno più volte preso posizione contro i movimenti omofobi e transfobici e le legislazioni anti-drag in America.
Durante il festival Coachella, nell’aprile 2023, le boygenius hanno commentato le restrizioni alle persone transgender imposte in Florida e Missouri, rimarcando il loro appoggio nei confronti delle persone trans. Durante una data del ''tour'' in Tennessee, invece, si sono esibite in drag, per protestare contro i disegni di legge anti-LGBTQ proposti dal governatore dello stato, Bill Lee <ref>James Factora, ''[https://www.them.us/story/tennesee-drag-ban-trans-minors-health-care-bills-head-to-governor Tennessee Bans Public Drag Performances and Gender-Affirming Care for Minors]'', «them», 24 febbraio 2023.</ref>.
